Reiki History & Practice

Reiki is a gentle, hands-on energy healing practice that originated in Japan in the early 1900s. The word “Reiki” comes from two Japanese words: Rei, meaning “universal” or “spiritual,” and Ki, meaning “life force energy.”

Together, Reiki refers to the universal life energy that flows through all living things.

The practice was developed by Mikao Usui, a Japanese spiritual teacher, as a way to support balance and healing in the body, mind, and spirit. Usui’s teachings were passed on to students, and Reiki has since grown into a global practice with many styles and lineages.

Reiki sessions involve light touch or hovering hands to gently guide energy where it’s needed. It’s often experienced as calming, centering, and deeply restorative. Reiki supports the body’s natural healing process and can complement both traditional medical care and holistic wellness practices.

At its heart, Reiki is about reconnecting — with yourself, your body, your spirit, and your sense of inner peace.

What to Expect in a Session

If you’re curious about Reiki but not sure what to expect, that’s totally okay. Reiki is a simple, comforting way to give yourself space — to rest, reflect, and reset.

During a session with me, you’ll be welcomed into a calm, peaceful space. We’ll start with a short check-in and intention setting. Then you’ll lie down (fully clothed) while I use gentle touch, sound healing, and crystals to help guide your energy into balance. Most people find the experience deeply relaxing — many say they feel lighter, clearer, or more grounded afterward.

You don’t need to believe in anything specific to benefit from Reiki. All you need is a little openness. I’ll meet you where you are, and we’ll go from there.
